  • Academic Bookstore: (Akateeminen Kirjakauppa). Keskuskatu (opposite Stockmann), [86]. The largest bookstore in Northern Europe, with extensive selections in English too. An underground passage connects the bookstore to Stockmann. Tram: 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10.
  • A seaside stroll in Helsinki: une marche de 7km sur le bord de l'eau. On se rend en métro.
  • Suomenlinna: la Gibraltar du nord, classé site patrimoine de l'UNESCO.
  • Lutheran Cathedral, le symbole non officiel d'Helsinki.
  • Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art: un musée d'art contemporain, c'est toujours très cool.
  • C'est clair qu'on va monter la tour Olympique pour avoir une vue imprenable sur la ville!

... from the menu on the left you'll find information under "Russia" (="venaja" in Finnish) ... The best thing to do is to take the Allegro train with 2 daily departures taking you to St. P in 3.5 hours ... Remember that you'll need to apply for a visa beforehand

I'm attaching 3 maps in different scales for you to orientate yourself: Letter "A" is the location of the Finlandskij Railway station and I've marked the very heart of St. P with red paint in map-1. The station is relatively close to downtown but still far and there's water inbetween (the metro goes under). If you can find a hotel along Nevski Prospect, the main street, you can nicely stroll in the very downtown area. You should probably look for 4* stars or at least 3*, but they may be a bit pricey. I've usually stayed a bit further from the very heart of St. P but then again I'm quite used to the metro system (which is manageable but NOT the simplest around).

Some hotels worth considering, all inside or closeby the old town and easily walkable from the ferry terminal, if you don't carry much luggage. You might consider leaving some of your luggage on hold in Helsinki if you only make a short stint to Tallinn. A good idea would be to take an am ferry, stay one night in Tallinn and return the following day. Taxis are also relatively cheap in Tallinn for short stretches like ferry-to-hotel.

- Barons hotel - Baltic Hotel Vana Wiru (I've stayed here) - Viru Inn - Sokos Hotel Viru (THE most legendary hotel in Tallinn where MOST Finns looking for a party have stayed thruout the years; dates back to Soviet times but has had several face lifts since. I would not necessarily recommend it unless you want to find out this landmark in Tallinn)

You should be able to find all these under booking.com and might get rooms under 100 euros per night (depending on when you travel - Ichecked the Sat-Sun night 7-8 May)

À voir[modifier]

  • Medieval Old Town. Excellently preserved, built in the 15-17th centuries. This compact area is best explored on foot.
  • Museum of Occupations, Toompea str. 8, corner of Toompea St. and Kaarli Blvd, [42]. Describes the life conditions under Soviet and Nazi regimes.
  • x-KGB Headquarters, Pikk 61. Now the Interior Ministry and not generally open to the public, this is where the KGB detained and tortured suspected dissidents. A Soviet-era joke says that this was the tallest building in Estonia: even from the basement, you could see Siberia. Interrogations were indeed conducted in the basement and you can see even today how the windows were crudely bricked up with concrete to mute the sound.
  • Kalamaja District, (north west from Old City). The oldest suburb of Tallinn, dating back to the 14th century. It was probably inhabited by fishermen (Kalamaja means "Fish house") and mostly houses workers. The current wooden buildings are from the 19th century.

5-6 jours à St-Pétersbourg.

  • Ça a coûté combien comme voyage?

Pas particulièrement cher à St-Pétersbourg. Environ 50$/nuit en plein coeur du centre-ville. Pas propre comme un Holiday Inn mais correct. Les Russes ne parle pas anglais.

  • À quel moment t'es allé?

Début juin: fantastique.

  • Comment t'as fait pour aller de Tallin à Saint-Pétersbourg?
  • Est-ce que ça prend des VISA pour l'Estonie et la Russie? Comment as-tu fait?

Prend un VISA pour la Russie. Il faut demander à une agence de voyage pour avoir une invitation (150$).

Billet d'avion trop cher pour partir de St-Petersbourg.

Mythe scandinave. Ambiance d'une demi-million d'habitant standard. Ressemble à une ville d'Europe standard. Pas trait teuton. Grosse forteresse en brique rouge (y a le mot blood dedans) construite sur le lieu précis de la mort d'un tsar.

Plus typique du nord qu'Helsinki. Dans le top 5 des capitales européennes à voir. La Venise du nord, eau très présente. Ville à marcher. Hermitage = 1 journée. Beaucoup de cathédrales orthodoxes à voir.
