Letter "A" is the location of the Finlandskij Railway station and I've marked the very heart of St. P with red paint in map-1. The station is relatively close to downtown but still far and there's water inbetween (the metro goes under). If you can find a hotel along Nevski Prospect, the main street, you can nicely stroll in the very downtown area. You should probably look for 4* stars or at least 3*, but they may be a bit pricey. I've usually stayed a bit further from the very heart of St. P but then again I'm quite used to the metro system (which is manageable but NOT the simplest around).
